When you turn on Wi-Fi in your place of business or office, it is crucial to ensure your connection is not only safe but also secure and other people cannot access your router to alter the settings. If you believe the administrator settings of your router have been tampered with, there are two things you can do. You can either change the username and password or factory reset your router.
However, there are still other methods through which you can reset your Linksys wireless router. In this guide, the main aim is to show you how to reset your username and password on your wireless router.
So first things, you need to reset your router before you create a new password.
Resetting your Linksys wireless router
- Turn on your router
Many models of this brand don’t come with the on and off switch, but they turn on as soon as you plug them into an outlet.
- Reset your router
After the power light starts to blink, hold the reset button of the router for about ten seconds, the reset button is located at the back of the router next to the power cord. However, different models have different positions for their reset buttons.
Older models need you to press and hold the rest button for about thirty seconds.
- Turn of the router and turn it on again
To turn off the router, unplug it from the source of power for and wait for about thirty seconds before you plug it again and turn it on. This procedure is known as power cycling.
- Wait for the power to cease blinking
If the light does not stop to blink, turn the router off, leave it for thirty seconds before you turn it on again.
- Connect the router to your PC
Connect the router to your PC using Ethernet cable. The router has Ethernet ports on the back, to connect to the PC. When you connect your router to your PC, the Ethernet port light will start to blink.
- Connect your router with a modem
Turn off the modem, insert the router into the modem and turn on the modem. At this stage, the modem will connect to the internet port in your wall and the PC. You should not connect your computer to the router at this point.
Logging into your router
Open your browser and navigate to the router administration screen using the following address http://192.168.1.1/
Now, enter your default username and password, when the administration screen of the router loads, type ‘’admin’’ in the username filed and ‘’admin’’ in the password field.

- Changing your username and password
Once your router’s setup page loads, navigate to the username and password sections. If you don’t see any of them, go to the setup tab and click the Basic tab. Type in your new username and password. Make sure that you note down your username and password so that you can retrieve them in case you forget them.
- Navigate to the MAC tab’’
Click on the ‘’setup field’’ and click on MAC ‘’Address Clone’’ field. MAC is the short form for Media Access Control and it is a special ID your ISP uses to identify your modem.
- Assign the Media Access Control to the router
In the ‘’Media Access Control Address ’’ field, click on the ‘’Enable’’ radio button and click the ‘’Clone My PCs MAC’’ section and save your settings.
- Check the status of your internet connection
On the status tab, if you see digits other than 0.0.0.0, then the setup is perfect, if you don’t see that, click on the ‘’Release IP Address and click ‘’Renew IP Address.’’
If the connect fails, power cycle your modem and then do the same to the router as well as your computer. If the problem persist communicate with your ISP.
